How do you read a U-40 syringe?

Every unit on a U-40 syringe is 0.025 mL, whatever the barrel size. A 0.3 mL U-40 syringe holds 12 units, a 0.5 mL holds 20 units, and a 1 mL holds 40 units. Count lines from zero and check what one line equals on your barrel; it is printed by the numbers.

The math

1 U-40 unit = 0.025 mL
capacity (units) = barrel mL × 40
0.3 mL → 12 units · 0.5 mL → 20 units · 1 mL → 40 units
mL = units ÷ 40

Find what one tick equals

Look at two numbered marks and count the small lines between them. If the barrel is labeled 0, 5, 10 and there are 10 spaces between 0 and 5, each line is ½ unit. If there are 5 spaces, each line is 1 unit. Do this once for every new box; spacing varies by manufacturer and barrel size.

Worked examples

0.5 mL U-40 syringe with ½-unit lines: 3½ units is the line just after the long 3-unit mark (7 small lines from zero). Volume = 3.5 × 0.025 = 0.0875 mL.

1 mL U-40 syringe with 1-unit lines: 12 units is two lines past the "10" label. Volume = 12 × 0.025 = 0.3 mL.

0.3 mL U-40 syringe: 8 units = 16 half-unit lines from zero = 0.2 mL.

Reading the plunger

Read at the flat edge of the plunger seal closest to the needle, not the domed tip. Hold the syringe at eye level and tap out air bubbles first, since bubbles take up volume. Smaller barrels spread each unit over more length, which makes small numbers easier to read.
